The Medicine of Tenderness

Beneath the anxious quickening

Below the pace of frantic fear

Deep within the despair

The armor is rusted and cracked

And what we long for calls us by name

Tenderness

The salve for contact with reality

That warms us awake from the

Stupor of ceaseless worry

Tenderness

The portal to the eternal

That cradles us in soft and strong arms

And encourages us

To lay down our burden

Tenderness

The hand that turns our face up

to see the stars and reminds us

Of the elemental truth of being

Tenderness

That which reaches into sorrow

And consecrates it with joy

Tenderness

Say it again and again

Like an incantation of love

Tenderness

Resounding with wonder

In the fragility of this Life

Tenderness

Polish it with intention and attention

Watch it become a mirror

Where all that you are

Is seen

Tenderness

I have spent too much time, and also exactly the right amount of time, oriented to a position of strength. Measuring things that ought not be measured, like worthiness and lovability, on my ability to endure. The blueprint of all our lives has been divinely designed to bring us to our knees, a space that holds both pain and prayer. Tenderness is the felt sense of the divine that rests with us in both of these places, softening our grasp and filling our open palms with an abundance of acceptance and gentleness.

When we cultivate tenderness in the process of excavating layers of conditioned debris, de-armouring vulnerability, and practicing rest and receiving; rigidity bows to grace, fear abides trust, force relinquishes, and soft surrender reigns. This potent alchemy takes place when we invite the fullness of life to visit us, leaving behind the tendency to reject entire parts of our experience because they carry weight, discomfort, and pain.

Dear ones, these experiences are what make our hearts grow bigger and softer. They bolster our courage and capacity to be fully present and able to receive the blessing of tenderness. The curriculum for this practice includes showing up imperfectly, taking up space, and asking for help. The technology of grace carries this sweet medicine into the hearts of everyone we encounter. This is the power of community, as we cannot, and were never meant to, do it alone.

Rather than hardening my heart, my experience of pain and grief has created a spaciousness within that has made it possible for me to receive the outpouring of love and support from the community of tender mirrors I am surrounded by. If you have been on this journey with me for a while, or if we are new friends, I am deeply grateful for your patience and presence as I navigate these rich currents.

There is an old belief that we must be fully healed in order to participate in love. In my own experience, participating in love is what has brought me the deepest healing. I ally myself with modalities that carry a vibration of tenderness and harmonize at the frequency of grace, music for awakening the body, mind, and soul to even greater love.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a critical tool to wield when crafting tenderness. Few systems have as much impact on the human body as the craniosacral system. It protects and nourishes the brain and spinal cord and affects nearly every aspect of central nervous system performance.

In using gentle techniques to normalize the craniosacral system, the body will self-correct and unravel pain and dysfunction at the source. This medicine of tenderness naturally helps eliminate stress, strengthen resistance to disease, and enhances health in every dimension.

Come, rest your head in my hands, and let tenderness tend to you.

"And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain.

And he said:

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.

Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;

And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.

And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen.

It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.

Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility:

For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,

And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears. "
